Rhinebeck Historical Society: Path to the American Dream
The Big Role of a Small Street in Rhinebeck:
Rhinebeck’s Oak Street is a one-thousand-foot stretch of side-street that became a home and springboard to the hopes and dreams of Americans, both aspiring and native-born, in the run-up to the Civil War. Some were recently freed enslaved persons of color, others were Irish Catholic immigrants, others were working class White Protestants looking to advance socially and economically. Brief intersections with the aspirations of Indigenous Peoples and women seeking equal treatment, remind us of their stories. With a brief introduction to the ongoing work of the Rhinebeck 7th Grade Civics Class of Henry Frischknecht. With support from the Village and Town of Rhinebeck.
