A new temporary ice skating rink has opened in Tivoli, courtesy in part of a donation from artists Brice and Helen Marden.

The $4,000 rink at Memorial Park, which measures 30 by 60 feet, is open now every day from morning to 9 p.m. It is being maintained by volunteers, who also have access to a Zamboni ice resurfacer.

“We’re thrilled to provide Tivoli residents with a fun, charming, outdoor amenity in the deep cold of another Covid winter,” Mayor Joel Griffith said. The rink is free and open to anyone who wishes to use it. Visitors should bring their own ice skates; there are no rentals.

The ice rink was purchased by a company called EZ ICE Inc., based in Newton, Mass. EZ ICE manufactures ice rinks for use in backyards, according to the company’s website.

Tivoli has erected other temporary ice rinks in previous years, according to Griffith. This year’s rink can be taken apart in sections and stored when the season ends.

Visitors are urged to follow the condition signs located at the rink; they will stipulate times when it is too warm to use the ice.
